Concannon’s Merlots have been variable. This latest offering is dry and tart, with red cherry and coffee flavors that finish in a scour of acidity. It needs the softening, enriching presence of fatty meats and cheeses.

A nice, dry wine, crisp and tart with acids, clean as a whistle, and bone dry. It features fresh citrus and honeydew flavors, with a hint of peppery spice on the finish. Best Buy

How ripe the grapes got during this warm vintage. The glass is filled with lush, plump blackberry and cassis flavors that are easily able to support considerable oak. This fine wine is very soft.

Dusty and plummy on the nose, this is full-bodied on the palate, with black-cherry, chocolate and earth flavors. A briny soy-sauce component sneaks in to add complexity, and there’s a pleasant peppery bite to the finish. Soft tannins make it drinkable now, but it should age well, too.

Opens with strong aromas of apricot jam, vanilla, honey and wildflower notes, and turns fruity-spicy on the palate. There’s the rich texture and flavor of smoky honey, and the finish is spicy and just a little sweet.

Here’s a rich, balanced Petite Sirah with a lot going for it. Full-bodied and dry, it’s enormously deep in red and black currant, dark chocolate and anise flavors, with considerable tannins. Easy to find, with 55,000 cases produced, and a great example of why Petite Sirah is such a hot variety.

From the winery that claims to have introduced Petite Sirah as a varietal wine comes this dynamic bottling. It’s full-bodied, dry and tannic, with a deep undertow of blackberry, cherry, plum and coffee flavors, and has a complex structure. Will be beautiful with a grilled steak, but this is a wine you can stash away for at least a decade.
