Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As the production on this wine climbs (it’s up to 35,000 cases now), the final product becomes more generic. An opening of bold berry fruit comes with a pounding mix of oaky vanilla and milk chocolate, while the palate has acidity for zest but also a lot of creamy oak. Very oaky on the finish, leaving a lasting impression that’s more about resin and vanilla than fruit or individuality.

For serious Carmenère, Carmín is at the top of the list. It’s almost late-harvest in terms of richness and ripeness, with earth, leather, mineral, pepper, plum and berry on the nose. Dense and balanced, yet a little on the soft side, with meaty raspberry and plum flavors. Finishes dark, with coffee, toast and leather. A cuddly, chewy wine to drink now for all its power and richness.

Like always, this Merlot is a potent brew of dark fruit, molasses, peppery spice and Chilean terroir. The plush palate is extremely ripe and forward, as it offers mounds of berries and chocolate. New World at every turn, and what’s wrong with that? 38,000 cases produced, so it’s available.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thick and rich, with hedonistic black-fruit aromas and all the accents of leather, tobacco and olive that come with a great Chilean Cabernet. In the mouth, everything comes together in a commendable knit, and it doesn’t sacrifice anything, be it berry fruit, herbal accents, tannic grip or acidity. Drink now through 2013.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Kicks off with some balsamic and olive aromas, while the palate is full of black cherry and berry fruit. Round and clean, with a soft feel despite having real tannic backbone. Likable in a mainstream way. Imported by Banfi Vintners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts with intense black-fruit aromas and dark, smoky accents as well as baked berries, licorice and meat. In the mouth, it’s a bit clumsy and amped up, with big tannins, extract and a mouthfeel that grabs. Flavors of berry fruit and mint are good, while the finish bounces toward a loud finish. Not what you’d call an elegant wine; it’s more about ripeness, power and extract.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Every year one of Chile’s most earnestly made Carmenères is Terrunyo, and the 2004, while a touch softer and less focused than the ’03, is still a very nice wine that offers the best this grape can deliver. It’s a plump internationally-styled red with berry syrup and chocolate flavors, while the finish is rich, chewy and smooth. Drink now through 2008.

We won’t call this the best Terrunyo SB to date, but it is typically clean, mineral and full of lime and passion fruit. The overall balance and purity are up the ladder, while the flavors of green fruits, passion fruit, brine and lime don’t hold back. Top notch SB from Chile to drink now.

Concha y Toro Sauvignon Blanc - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts out clean and neutral before unveiling hints of white peach and early season nectarine. The mouth is jolting in its acidity, creating a slightly tart flavor profile that drives home green apple and lemon. For some it will seem sharp; others will probably say it’s Sauvignon Blanc in its best form.

Big, stout and solid, with a smoky, pure-fruit nose that’s very attractive. Lush and full in the mouth, with pure, deep, intoxicating flavors of blackberrry, black currant and Mediterranean black olive. Solid throughout and holds its form across the finish. Ripe, smooth and delicious. Drink now thru 2012.
