Winery - Conde de Siruela

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More sharp and jumpy than many over-$20 wines from the region, but if you like a more racy, acidic style it may be up your alley. The wine offers blackberry flavors, spice and some herbal notes, while the finish thickens with mushroom and chocolate. A good but sketchy wine with a few loose ends.

A big, ripe and earthy wine, with some baked black fruit and chocolate to the nose. Far more saturated and dense than Siruela’s other Ribera wines, but amid the heft there’s rich plum and roasted berry flavors and good overall balance. The finish has an herbal tinge.

Violet and blackberry aromas are an inviting first act, while the palate is lush and fairly deep, with thick blackberry and mildly brambly flavors. Maybe it doesn’t reach the penthouse, but as Ribera del Duero goes it more than makes the grade. 45,000 cases made.

Smooth, comfortable, fairly deep and loaded with oak, leather and ripe black fruit. This is a round, lively, healthy wine with good color, lots of blackberry and plum, and some spice to jazz it up. It isn’t the most complex or thorough RDD on record, but it does deal a ripe mouthfeel, length and cheer. 40,000 cases made, so it’s hardly a boutique wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the best wine from Siruela, and for the price it should be the real thing, which it is. Elite shows immense color and intensity. The nose bleeds bacon, mocha and lemony oak, while the palate has blackberry, coconut and coffee flavors. With a touch more depth and finesse this would make the next level. 15,000 cases produced.

Yeast, creosote, mercaptans and baked apple aromas are odd companions to flavors of blackberry and mulling spice. Although the tannins and acidity have a bit of grip, the midpalate seems a bit thin and watery.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe, dark, a little oily and totally compelling from an aromatic standpoint. The palate is right where it should be, as neither the tannins nor the acidity are out of whack. Boysenberry, blackberry and plum flavors carry an herbal touch, and the finish is layered, with a lasting impression of coffee.
