A good wine that pleases for its jammy currant and cherry flavors and delicious overlay of vanilla, smoke and char from good oak. The flavors are so rich and broad they flood the mouth and persist long after you swallow. It’s a little soft, though.

A brittle, peppery and ultimately disappointing wine, this 100% varietal lacks the smoothness and cherry-herb complexities you expect from a fine Rutherford Cab. Finishes sharp and dry.

Earth and cherry flavors mark this soft, dry wine, with some background notes of leather, hung meat and spice. Turns vanilla-oaky on the long finish. Shows harmony throughout.

Made from all five major varieties, this Napa blend seems built for early drinking; the soft finish does not suggest ageability. At the same time, it’s quite pleasant and complex now, with well-developed flavors and a classic mouthfeel.

Greatly improved over the 2004, this single-vineyard wine shows lots of breed and elegance. It’s classically built, with firm, rich tannins framing flavors of red and black cherries, herbs and cedar.

Ultraripe and quite oaky, but for all the intensity this big wine maintains balance and harmony. The fruit is a blast of blackcurrants and vanilla, rich and fat in the middle palate and long in the finish. Near-perfect tannins lend structure to this fine Merlot.

A very fine Cab Franc that shows how well the variety can do when well made. It’s soft and silky in the mouth, with rich flavors of red cherry pie and licorice, edged with spicy, cedary complexities. Drink now with a good steak.

The winery has focused on Cab Franc, with mixed results, as the variety is tough to master. This bottling is very dry and astringently tannic, but it has a rich core of cherry fruit. Such is the balance that it might soften and sweeten after 2008.

Owned for many years by Washington State’s Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Conn Creek has struggled to regain its early reputation for Napa Cabernet. This bottling is very tannic and astringent, with a rusticity that’s unlikely to age away. But the fruit is ripe and polished.

A little bitter and rough around the edges, but a very delicious wine, with lots of cherry, red currant, liqueur, bacon, Dr. Pepper cola and cinnamon spice flavors. Give it a brief decant and drink now.
