Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
All of the 2005 Cono Sur entry-level wines are showing nicely, including this Cabernet. The nose is fairly floral and touched up by lavender, while the palate is racy and defined by zesty red fruit. It’s kind of a throwback in that it emphasizes light fruit and acidity over oak and heft.

For Chilean Riesling, this steps it up a notch. The nose hits with petrol and white fruits, while the palate is lightly spritzy and edgy, with sweet, tropical flavors that spread out over the palate. Pithy on the finish, but a good taste of South American Riesling.

Light, mellow aromas don’t go much beyond green fruits and orange blossom. Round and easy in the mouth, with melony, reluctant flavors of honeydew and peach. Lean on the finish, with some jalapeño heat. Pretty much average for Chilean Sauvignon Blanc.

Apple and peach aromas are on the spot. The body here is round and healthy, while the flavors are tropical leaning, with melon and peach in the background. Smooth and fresh on the finish, and good as a whole.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet and round from start through finish. In between you’ll find foresty aromas and sugary fruit with strong wood accents. The finish teeters on syrupy but with ample spicy berry fruit, coffee nuances, and healthy acidity, it’s pretty good within its class.

Aromas of cherry and raspberry bring a slight earthy stemminess, while the palate is light and zesty, with semisharp plum and pie cherry fruit flavors and a dash of red sucking candy. Medium-long at best on the finish, with citrus, tang and pepper notes.

Soft, distant and easy on the nose. The palate is defined by sweet banana, peach and vanilla flavors, while the finish is sweet and simple. With a solid mouthfeel, this registers as a basic but good Chardonnay.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A true Riesling from the deep south of Chile with petrol and peach pit aromas and then sweeter citrus flavors. It’s full, fresh and balanced, with a friendly, easy finish that suggests mango and pineapple. Starts out Germanic but finishes tropical.

A good as well as interesting Carmenère. The berry and warm-earth aromas are welcoming, and the palate is savory and firmed up by serious tannic zap. Fairly bold and powerful as basic reds go, with elevated character.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Comes across like a straightforward warm-climate Viognier, meaning it’s full and waxy, with peach and nectarine aromas and flavors, a touch of searing heat, and pithiness to the back palate and finish. It’s also juicy and zesty due to plenty of acids.
