An oaky yet lean Chardonnay from northern Italy, with the emphasis on lean. Toasty, but the almost sharp lemon fruit is where the action is. Very crisp and light; try with vegetable antipasto.

There’s a nice mineral vein that helps keep this wine focused. Beyond that, you’ll taste fresh fruit and some distance notes of roasted almond and sourdough. The mouthfeel is clean and crisp and the bubbles are soft and creamy.

The color is so light that it wouldn’t pass for rosé in most circles. The bouquet is equally light, so much so that it’s boring. The palate features a struggling mix of banana, clove and resin flavors, and the finish seems heavy more than it is clean. Lacks pop and pizzazz. —M.S.

Toasted aromas take the form of coconut and roasted hazelnuts. On the palate, the unmistakable flavor of popcorn overrides what apple fruit might want to show its face. The finish is heavy and dry, and all in all it really doesn’t offer much to win you over. —M.S.

Vanilla and toast aromas are pleasant, as are the apple, pear and sweet coconut flavors. The finish is toasty, smooth and fairly long. Overall this spumante is a touch chunky and awkward, but it’s also quite solidly structured, with good lemon-lime undertones. Best Buy. —M.S.

Tight and compact with pristine aromas of peach, citrus and sourdough, this vibrant sparkling Brut would pair with shellfish and oysters. There are linear mineral notes at the back but the wine is fresh and tart in the mouth.
