Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Conterno Fantino is one of the lighter, grapier Dolcettos tasted. Plenty of dark fruit, an easygoing personality and nicely balanced with a solid finish. Amiable rather than profound.

Bricco Bastia offers an inky, dense expression of Dolcetto with loads of dark fruit, cherry and blueberry intensity. There are also mineral notes in there and the close is slightly vinous, chewy and raw.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In 10 years’ time, this rating may look stingy, but at this tasting the wine wasn’t showing all that much. A bit lean and closed in, with leather, dusty earth, vanilla and hints of maraschino cherries followed by a tight, firm finish. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

Conterno Fantino Nebbiolo - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied and richly textured, this wine nevertheless retains the essence of Nebbiolo in its delicately floral aromas and complex flavors. Cherries, plums and prunes all mingle on the palate, picking up nuances of vanilla and spice. Long and silky on the finish. Drink 2009–2016. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

Vanilla and coconut lead the way; the aromas are dominated by oak, and the flavors follow suit, developing coffee, nougat and vanilla notes. It’s a definite oak bomb, but a soft, supple and seductive one, with a long finish and nary a hard edge.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Everything works well here, starting with the chocolate and black cherry nose with its oaky wrap and slightly earthy notes. The wine is medium-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel. Elements of the nose show again on the long finish, where a dollop of black pepper is added. Drink now.

Conterno Fantino Barbera - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A softer, gentler Barolo, with Nebbiolo’s hard edges tamed by a combination of the vintage, short, rotary fermentation and new oak. Yet as if to thwart critics of the modern style, it retains the essence of Nebbiolo in its floral, cherry and leather aromas—vanilla plays only a small part. Firms up considerably on the finish, suggesting greater ageability than at first glance, picking up hints of citrus peel and tea leaves.

A bit green for Barbera, with strawberry-rhubarb aromas, and flavors that feature fresh herbs intertwined with crisp red fruit. Finishes with notes of dark chocolate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Vignota Barbera d’Alba exhibits generous and simple fruit aromas of blackberry and boysenberry with loads of fresh cherry concentration. Those lively fruit tones are backed by tones of spice, cola and chocolate.

Sorí Ginestra plays with wild berries, bramble, exotic spice, leather and toasted almond to produce a linear, elegant wine. The fruit is bitter in the mouth and the wine has good acidity that suggests a long life of bottle aging ahead. Pair it with duck roasted with scallions of black truffle. Drink after 2018.
