A highly nuanced nose leaning more toward animal and mineral notes than fruit opens this muscular effort. Leather, ash and forest fire flavors dominate the palate, framed by sinewy tannins. A few cherry notes peek through the tar-infused finish. Serve with game.

From far-away 2003, this elegant Barolo shows a beautiful evolution in the glass. The wine warms up with pressed rose petal and dried raspberry aromas and segues to cedar, cola, mineral and light shadings of spice. A bright close and acidic note hold the hot vintage very nicely. Drink now.

An excellent vintage and an excellent cru (Cerequio is one of Barolo’s best) join forces here to produce a balanced, elegant wine. Aged hues of garnet and amber are enhanced by ethereal tones of wet earth, licorice, road tar, anise and dried fruit. The aromas are doled out in a measured, controlled fashion and the wine ends with dusty, ash-like notes. It’s ready to drink.

Made in the labor-intensive “classic method” (in which secondary fermentation occurs in the bottle), this sweet Asti sparkler is one of a kind. From the only producer to utilize this method, De Miranda offers longevity and yeasty tones of bee’s wax, peach and apricot.

An appealing wine with an odd nose. Aromas of cranberry, asphalt, and an almost diesel note initially are offputting. Beyond that, there is good black-cherry fruit and a full, smooth mouthfeel. Nice sweet-and-sour finish, with moderately full tannins.

This amber-colored Riserva offers slightly oxidized flavors of caramel, butterscotch and yellow rose. There are Sherry notes in there too, but not enough of them to disregard the wine. It shows good length and persistency.

The celebrated Cerequio cru is known for its elegant and refined wines. However, in this hot vintage, you can taste the maturity of the fruit thanks to the wine’s aromas of plum, prune and spice cake. Clay soils help shape the wine’s natural density and structure.

The Secolo vineyard is at the heart of the Cerequio cru and has been owned and farmed by the Contratto family since 1959. This edition of the wine shows warm notes of pressed raspberry and plum backed by textured tannins and solid structure.

This is not your standard Moscato d’Asti. This sophisticated expression benefits from high density planting in the vineyard and the fruit is fermented in special French barrique for extra creaminess. On the nose, this sparkling dessert wine is redolent of apricot, pineapple and honey.

Tenuta Secolo has aged beautifully over the years to culminate in the full, round and intense wine it is today. There’s heft and brawn here supported by cola, cherry liqueur, black licorice, earthy tones and a distinct note of natural rubber or Band Aid that only adds to the complexity. It’s full and tasty with a long finish of candied fruit.
