Kind of a downer given past performances of this label and the high quality of the ’05 harvest. Seems overly roasted and earthy, with rubbery, drawn aromas that don’t seem fully fresh. The palate is heavy, with cooked, leathery flavors of berry and fig. Finishes in similar fashion, with dull bitter flavors and leather.

Exemplary Ribera del Duero, given that ’02 was not a great year. This wine, however, pours on the richness fans of this region are looking for. The palate is lush and ripe, with deep plum and blackberry flavors supported by mocha and earth shadings. Offers a little bit of everything.

Big and full, but not over the top and definitely not modern or overoaked. The bouquet shows leather, brett, fine-grained wood and subtle dark-fruit aromas. The palate is texturally smooth, with mushroom and cola flavors accenting primary blackberry and plum. Ripe, ready and interesting. Good into 2011.

If a roasted, fully oaked nose is not your thing, then this is not your wine. But if some barrel-busting char, toast and mocha is fine by you, then this youthful, rambunctious wine will do the trick. It’s got power and pedigree but the heat of the vintage resulted in a softness that encourages near-term drinking. Best prior to 2009.
