Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It is rare to find a pure Petit Verdot (the grape used in some blends in Bordeaux) anywhere, let alone in Portugal. The Alentejo is a good place, with guaranteed ripeness for this fickle grape. Dark in color, packed with dense tannins and a heavy layer of wood, this is not for the faint-hearted. It is certainly ripe and rich.

A firm, tarry wine with ripe blackberry juicy fruits, layering fresh acidity and tannins. This has some wood flavors and fresh fruits. It is ready to drink now, but would repay cellaring for three to four years.

This cleverly packaged Syrah (check the back label) tastes more like an Aussie Shiraz than a Northern Rhône, but given Alentejo's climate, that's to be expected. Vanilla-laced oak frames big blackberry flavors that finish with a slight sensation of sweetness. It's a mouthfilling, fruity wine that doesn't lack for flavor.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Packed with ripe, juicy fruits, this is one of the fine range wines from Cortes de Cima. A blend of Aragonês and Syrah, it has fresh, black flavors and a lively tannic character. This wine would be great with barbecues.

A smooth, rich wine, full of young berries and lively acidity. There are tannins but they are covered with the ripe, jammy fruits which are so full and delicious.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Jammy blackberries blend with vanilla-scented oak in this rather New World-styled wine. It’s supple and fully ripe, with smooth tannins and very berry fruit. Might pass for a Zin in a blind tasting. Drink now–2008.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the star of the Cortes de Cima range, a powerful expression of rich fruit, but one tempered with a sympathetic, attractive structure, packed with black berry and ripe plum skin flavors, leaving plenty of tannins, but still finished with acidity and balance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of Aragonês and Trincadeira boasts hints of smoke, herbs, pepper and meat on the nose, along with plenty of cherry-scented fruit. Although it sounds like a cacophony, the reality is harmonious and smooth, finishing with a twist of peppery spice. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wine that has become something of a cult in Portugal, perhaps because of its mystery name (referring to a time when Syrah was not permitted in Portugal). This 2005 keeps the open, ripe blackberry jam fruit, with dark chocolate and herbal flavors. It has a generous, earthy character.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The estate wine of Corte de Cima is rich, soft, smooth. The fruit feels weighty, and misses out on freshness. But the opulent, jammy black fruit flavors and the soft spices are certainly attractive.
