Winery - Costers del Siurana

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Plenty of smoked meat, hard spice and pulsating fruit to the nose, which evolves greatly if given time. If there’s anything to take issue with, it’s that the wine is almost too much of a straight-shooter: It’s a touch racy and acidic, with a single beam of bright flavors off of which it doesn’t vary. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/ Fine Estates From Spain.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Staunch red fruit aromas are a bit prickly at first, but within a few minutes they settle on mineral, herbs, anise and licorice. The palate has a firm but pure feel, and the tannins aren’t too tough at all. Flavors of cassis, cherry cough drop and raisin are deep yet narrow, and just complex enough. Drink now through 2013.

Miserere offers most of what you’d expect from a high-end Priorat red. The nose features mineral, grilled meat, raisin, berry, cherry and even a citrusy accent. The palate has a full, complete feel and warm flavors of black cherry, licorice and raisin. Very nice but one step short of excellence. Drink now through 2012.

Generally speaking, this is a respectable Priorat from a tough year. The nose is berry packed, while the flavors run toward toast-covered raspberry. It’s typically grabby and expansive, as any good young wine from the area will be, yet you can drink it now with meat.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Intriguing but expensive sweet wine, with leather and dried cheese aromas as well as dusty, rubbery black fruits and licorice. It’s not that unusual or exciting in terms of mouthfeel, but the flavors of cassis liqueur, stewed cherry and black licorice are tight and powerful. Structured to last another decade, with meaty tannins and molasses on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mildly sweet and candied, with accents of rose petal, red licorice and high-quality raisin. As always, it’s an intense wine with red raspberry, cherry and plum flavors in front of finishing vanilla and butter. It’s a bit grabby and tannic, but it seems to have harnessed correct ripeness in what was a difficult, hot year.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine costs a lot for what it’s giving. The nose starts out hard and fruitless, and while the aromas come around, the wine always holds onto its corn and haystack character. Zippy acidity gives the mouth zest, and it also livens up papaya, banana and apricot flavors. Complex and different, but does it taste good enough to justify a $78 price tag?

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sleek and fruity, with round, mature aromas and flavors of strawberry and raspberry. Pleasant more than complex, with some acidic verve and a core of healthy fruit. Easy to like, with a lot of flavor. Drink now through 2006. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sassy and forward, with ripe aromas and exotic flavors. This wine registers at 16% but it’s not fortified, so it comes across more like a sweet but dry wine than, say, Port. Expressive and rich, with cherry cough drop, dark chocolate and raisin flavors. At one moment it’s table wine, the next an elixir. And the finish won’t quit. Perfect with cheese. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.
