Sweet and raisiny, with mineral and graham cracker aromas. Lots of red fruit controls —think raspberry, red plum and apple skin. The finish goes spicy and a touch hot; ultimately it offers a clean, lithe mouthfeel.

Vaguely floral on the nose, this Inzolia is lighter-weight than many of its brethren, with crisp, refreshing pear flavors.

This wine has the pedigree and aspirations, but it falls way short of striking the right chords. It’s astringent in the nose, with far too much obvious oak. The mouth is sharp, with razor-like acids that scorch. It tastes like a powdered drink mix more than a fine red wine.

L’Ardenza is a unique example of Mondeuse from Mt. Etna. The wine is rich and penetrating with lingering tones of wild berry, spice and background mineral notes. It offers a smooth, but rich sensation in the mouth.

This is a well-priced white wine (made with Inzolia grapes) that shows the aromatic freshness of cool-climate winemaking and the power and intensity of Sicily. The wine is redolent of peach, apricot and wild flowers.

Cottanera offers a rare glimpse of the potential of Syrah grown on Mt. Etna. This is a rich and powerful wine that sees 12 months in oak for dense aromas of black fruit, blueberry and spice. It would pair well with beef or game meats.

It’s all Merlot, and it’s all good. This is a wine that would make our Sexiest Wines of the Year list, if we had one. Lush and medium-full in the mouth, Grammonte has chewy tannins and a palate full of ripe blackberry, toast, chili pepper and a dash of red berry. Good acidity keeps the tannins in line; it finishes very long with more of the same flavors, plus some black pepper. Bouquet is a tantalizing mix of blackberry and cedar, doused in brown sugar and olive oil.

Mondeuse is the varietal in this one, from a line of Cottanera wines. Great color extraction in this blue-black wine. It delivers in the nose with intense blackberry and plum fruit. A modern-styled and gorgeous fruit palate drops in the middle, but finishes juicy and full.

Here’s a modern, yet softly delicate wine from Mount Etna (made from Nerello Mascalese with a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio) that offers tight berry nuances framed by generous tones of almond, cola and licorice. The wine tastes sophisticated and elegant thanks to its polished tannins and lingering mineral flavors.

Fresh berries and sweet cream accented with black pepper are found in the nose of this Sicilian Syrah. Tar, creosote and succulent blackberries burst on the palate. A wine with this much fruit would normally be perceived as sweet, but its complexity saves the day.
