Dark, dry, tannic and acidic, this is a wine that needs big, rich foods, or else a good deal of time in the cellar. Doesn’t offer much now beyond heft.

Soft and jammy, with black and red wild berry flavors and low acidity. ItÕs so soft and sweetly fruity itÕs almost like raspberry syrup, although it does have some structure and heat from alcohol. Fans of sweet wines will like it a lot.

You say Mataro, I say Mourvèdre. Either way, this is a country wine, rustic and honest. It has fruity flavors of berries and dried herbs. Its fierce tannins won’t age out, but the wine will be fine with cheese, red meats and such.

Awkward and simple, because the acids are tart and the fruit is too light and there isn’t much else in the way of flavor. It’s a light wine with very soft tannins. Might wake up with food. —S.H.

Though the nose displays interesting smoke, game and nutty notes, there’s also a skunky element that put off many tasters. The very dark, narrow palate shows faint black cherry and licorice notes, but is more espresso than anything else. There’s just not enough fruit.
