Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A lovely, elegant wine whose dryness and acidity make it perfect for a late afternoon cocktail. The lemon, lime, grapefruit and vanilla flavors finish a little thin, but this is a very nice Sauvignon Blanc for the price.

A little too soft and gluey to earn a higher score. Sweet, too, like melted black cherry pie filling. But good enough to get by.

A sound everyday wine with some special features. Although it’s a bit sharp, it shows nice flavors of black cherries, cola and oak, wrapped into fine, intricate tannins.

Sound and dry, if a bit thin, with fleeting flavors of berries and cherries, accented with oak. It’s good in every way, but needs greater concentration of fruit.

Does its Petite Sirah duty by being a deeply-colored, bone-dry, full-bodied wine of great tannic intensity. It’s deeply flavored too, with masses of blackberries, black currants, cola, leather and pepper. A very nice wine for barbecued beef.

A good value in this variety that often gets lost in the glare. Shows crisp coastal acidity brightening slightly sweet flavors of pineapples, papayas and honeysuckle, with spicy notes of vanilla and cinnamon.

This is a sound, rustic red wine. It’s comprised of undisclosed varieties, but tastes basically like a Rhône blend, with simple cherry, cola, herb and oak flavors.

Here’s a solid, smooth-drinking Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s dry and crisply tannic, with ripe flavors of black currants, cherries, cedar and spices.

This ’06 Zin is as spicy and fruity as you could desire, with masses of currants, cocoa, orange peel, licorice and pepper. But the tannin-acid balance is great, giving it a wonderful structure. Best now for youthful exuberance.

Tough and tannic in the mouth, with flavors of berries, currants, pepper and other spices. There’s a Porty taste on the finish.
