Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s soft, slightly oxidized, and generic. It’s pleasantly quaffable, marked in the finish by some rather bitter toast.

Covington Cellars Red Blend - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Covington’s reserve wine is a Bordeaux blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. Raspberry and cherry fruit is buttressed with underpinnings of iron ore, showing a lot of Red Mountain typicity, and fills in the midpalate with soft barrel flavors of toast and caramel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
2006 is a tighter, higher acid vintage than 2005, and the resulting wine has a compact sleekness. Hard raspberry candy fruit runs right into stiff tannins; it seems impenetrable until it’s been open for some hours.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This pretty Malbec shows genuine varietal character, and seems less oxidized than some of the other red wines from Covington Cellars. There is more fresh, primary fruit flavor—plum and apple—boosted by firm acids.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mostly Sangiovese, with 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s rather soft and open, with strawberry fruit and a lightly toasty finish.

Covington Cellars Red Blend - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As in 2003, the blend is 78% Syrah, 22% Sangiovese, all from the Seven Hills vineyard, and aged in 70% new Hungarian oak. The wine looks and tastes a bit oxidative, the fruit is soft and simple, the finish lightly toasty.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Hard and tannic, this doesn’t show much in the way of varietal character. There’s a hint of red fruit, some tar and rubber, and a thin, somewhat stemmy finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The emphasis here is squarely on the fruit, which is fresh and varietal, carrying flavors of apricot, peach and apple. Pleasing aromas support the impression of ripe stone fruit, with moderate alcohol and none of the bitterness that Viognier can show in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This pure Cabernet Franc is Covington’s most interesting and distinctive red. It delivers plump, ripe, spicy flavors of mixed berries. The French and American barrels bring more spice and toast, and the exit is soft and pleasing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The wine is almost honey-colored, and scented with sweet hay and clover. That impression of sweet grass carries over into the mouth, and it adds life and lift to the rather rich and heavy fruit. Don’t look for it to improve or to age beyond a year or two. The blend includes 7% Sauvignon Blanc.
