Winery - Cowhorn

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A Rhône blend, roughly equal parts Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, this biodynamically grown wine is spicy and complex, though still young and yeasty. It wants a few more months in bottle to settle, but already shows balanced stone fruit and baked pear flavors, lightly accented with toasty spices.

Cowhorn Vineyard & Winery is a new enterprise in southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley. The vineyard is already certified biodynamic, and the first releases show confidence and control throughout. This elegant Viognier was fermented with native yeast and did not go through malolactic. It mixes melon, peaches, pineapple and lime, and it’s rich without being heavy or hot.

A selection of prime, biodynamically farmed blocks from the estate vineyard, this Cowhorn reserve is elegant, detailed, rich and thoroughly captivating. Black cherry fruit is set in loamy earth flavors, soft and broadly displayed across the palate. Ripe without being in any way over the top, it brings in details of black tea, citrus, sandalwood and mocha. A complex wine of great finesse.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a biodynamic producer, this exceptional rosé has surprising depth of flavor. It’s a lovely, pale salmon, and scented with rose petals and watermelon. But it kicks in once swallowed, with fresh strawberry fruit that penetrates and persists well into the lingering finish, with backing minerality. Just 11.4% alcohol, and bone dry.

For those who value a totally natural, biodynamic, unfiltered wine, this is it. The neck of the bottle is lined with purple sediment that is almost psychedelic it’s so intense. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, and it’s a scrapey, authentic beast of a Grenache, with 15% Syrah in the blend, and it takes no prisoners. Grapey, full-throttle, deep and concentrated, with blueberries and plums, boysenberries and kirsch, it invites both contemplation and hedonistic pleasure.

This small, family-owned, biodynamically farmed vineyard and winery is quickly becoming a southern Oregon cult producer. Certainly one of the finest Viogniers produced anywhere in the Northwest, this extraordinarily aromatic wine showers the palate with luscious and tangy lemon, pineapple, Satsuma orange and pear fruit flavors. Then the spices pile on, lending an exotic twist to a lengthy midpalate, and leading into a lightly toasty finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This biodynamic Rhône blend is equal parts of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, co-fermented with native yeast. It’s a splendid example of the non-interventionist style, rich, and textural. The yeasty flavors are refreshing—pear and apple and cucumber fruit holding down the center—clean and solid. The wine gains power and brings in some toasty barrel flavors as it rolls into the finish.

Cowhorn wines are certified biodynamic and entirely natural. This stunning Syrah is inky black, and smells like a bowl of blueberries and blackberries. Threaded through those delicious berry flavors are composty highlights of earth and leaf. Beautifully balanced and intriguing; this is as good as any Oregon Syrah I’ve ever tasted.

From second leaf vines, this brings bright and fresh blueberry and blackberry fruit first and foremost. It’s a young, juicy, forward style, immediately appealing. The young vines barely hint at spice and pepper, but the pure fruit promises good things to come as this biodynamically farmed vineyard gets established.

This is just the second release from Cowhorn, but already quite confidently made. Tart and detailed, it hints at earthy, umami, fungal flavors, along with highlights of sweet baking spices. From a biodynamically certified vineyard, the wine was aged 16 months in 45% new French oak.
