Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This kitchen-sink blend boasts a high percentage of Petit Verdot (38%), which may account for its dramatic floral aromatics. Aside from roses, cherries also play a role. In the mouth, complex floral-herbal elements have a solid underpinning of cherries and raspberries, finishing with just enough tannins to stand up to rare beef. —J.C.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is definitely an acquired taste. The aromas were true to the varieties, with spice rack, blackberries and plums. Slightly sweet black plums and caramel on the palate mix with tannins and bubbles. Not for the meek. Drink now or give it some time to see what happens.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A dark, earthy style, laden with cassis, tobacco and shadings of vanilla. This is medium-bodied, with surprisingly crisp acids for the Barossa that give it an almost claret-like feel. Drink now–2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft tannins make this easy to drink, with a structure built upon crisp acids. Ripe black cherry flavors also feature hints of licorice and dill, so there’s more to it than simple fruit. Drink now–2010.

Craneford Shiraz - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Exceptional ripeness has brought soft tannins and high alcohol, but the acids are bright enough to point up the cherry fruit. Some peppery, savory, meaty overtones add complexity. Drink now and over the next few years.

Craneford Grenache - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Recently bottled, Craneford’s 2006 Shiraz is very youthful and primary, with cherry-berry aromas and flavors completely dominating at this stage. It’s almost confected in its fruity forwardness, yet shows enough structure to mostly rein in its ebullience. Drink 2009–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sourced largely from the northern end of the region, this features bold blackberry flavors slightly reminiscent of preserves and marked by dark shadings of cola and chocolate. Yet despite the superripe flavors, the wine remains well structured and retains some slightly herbal overtones. Drink now–2012.

Craneford Cabernet Sauvignon - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A step up in seriousness from Craneford’s easy-drinking regular Shiraz, the Fire Station bottling is sourced from 80-year-old vines from the northern Barossa. Cola, spice and meat notes mark the aromas, while the blackberry fruit on the palate is very juicy and fresh. A touch of cedar on the finish brings the fruit back into focus. Drink now–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, full-bodied (15.5% alcohol) wine, with pleasant cassis and chocolate flavors and a mouthwatering finish. But something isn’t quite right with the aromatics, which carry a persistent hint of wet dog. Hmmm.

Full-bodied and broad, this wine offers mouthfilling flavors of peach and citrus tinged with cinnamon and clove. Despite its ample size, it remains mouthwatering on the finish.
