Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot, dense and dark in color. There are ripe, juicy fruit aromas, with a light smokiness. Ripe, vibrant black fruits dominate with wood flavors in the background. This blend brings out the juiciness of the Merlot and balances it with the tannins of Malbec. Imported by Winebow.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the flagship red from Cullen’s Wilyabrup vineyards in Margaret River. A classic blend of Cabernet and Merlot, aged for 18 months in wood, it has huge, ripe fruit, along with elegance. Flavors of chocolate, mulberry and spices come together with ripe tannins. This wine definitely needs aging—give it five years at least. Imported by Winebow.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From the low-yielding 2002 vintage, this wood-aged Chardonnay has finely knit tropical fruits with creamy wood and ripe green plums. It is ripe and rich, with a light touch of pepper hinting at the 14% alcohol. Imported by Winebow.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit reticent on the nose, showing hints of struck flint, lime and custard, but this tightly coiled Chard shows its true brilliance in the mouth, revealing complex fruit flavors of lime and lemon, but also slightly riper notes: apple and white peach come to mind. The bright core of acids shines on the long, refreshing finish. Should age comfortably through 2015, at least.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With only 50 cases imported, this review will be of only academic interest to most consumers, but for those lucky enough to latch onto a bottle or two, try to hold off opening one until 2015 or so. Right now, it’s oh so promising, but also very tight. Scents of toasted almonds, vanilla and cassis only stubbornly emerge, and the wine is clearly packed with potential but also showing a lot of tannin on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Vanilla and toast notes from lavish new French oak treatment let a few notes of lanolin and grass peek through on the nose. The palate is quite crisp, with some citrus notes that lead to a fairly long, vanilla-infused finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Despite this wine’s reputation for longevity, the 2007 seems to be an early-maturing vintage of Diana Madeline. It’s full bodied and supple, with tobacco and cassis notes that pick up chocolaty, almost fudge-like nuances.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cullen’s Diana Madeline is amazingly consistent from year to year, and the 2006 continues that tradition. It’s maybe a touch fuller-bodied and rounder than some years, but maintains a sense of restraint and a timeless blend of tobacco, cedar and cassis, finishing with a flourish of mint.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A perplexing wine to evaluate, Cullen’s 2004 flagship red is a medium-weight blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It’s fruit-forward, with bright cherry and cassis notes, but is there enough stuffing behind that to balance the moderately astringent tannins? Give it 3–5 years and see if it blossoms.
