Firm, ripe and very solid: a chunkier, more muscular style of Pinot Noir, somewhat reminiscent of Cabernet. There’s good black cherry and boysenberry fruit, some milk chocolate and vanilla bean barrel flavors, and plenty of ripeness. Perfectly enjoyable right now, this is a good effort at this price point.

Cuneo’s Willamette Valley bottling is one smooth customer, classically styled with cherry-flavored fruit and lots of oaky vanilla. Solid, simple, and leans just a bit to the alcoholic side.

Heavily oaked, with aromas of marshmallow, cherry and rubber. The palate is firm and tannic, with spicy flavors and cherry-style fruit. The finish is tart and tight, but very ripe and pure. This wine needs some time to lose its tannic fierceness; just an hour of airing did it wonders.

Herbal and earthy, with aromas of pepper and barbecue sauce. The plum and strawberry fruit is tight and dry, while the overall impression is of a sharp, lean red that’s a bit hot and sour. This Sangiovese has little in common with the wines of Tuscany, and in this case that’s not a good thing.

This is interesting: a 55% Oregon/45% Washington Bordeaux blend from top vineyards in both states (the two rivers being the Columbia and the Rogue). I like the concept, but both the Red Mountain and the Rogue Valley fruit create similarly tough, chewy tannins, so neither side modulates the other. Very tannic and hard, it’s tough sledding.

Rustic and spicy at first, and then it fills out nicely. The fruit is on the rich side, leaning more toward blackberry and Bing cherry than anything red and lean. The finish is smooth and creamy, and ultimately very pleasant. The texture and density are just right, while potent yet restrained acidity keeps it fresh at all points. Best Buy.

Inky and dense, with plum-cake aromas along with nuances of tree bark and nutmeg. The more time you give this ripe, tannic red, the more it’ll offer. The fruit is pure and ripe, and the tannins are anything but meek. On the finish, root beer, chocolate and vanilla notes add some complexity and sweetness. The fruit is 61% Columbia Valley (Wash.) and 39% southern Oregon, and the whole is a fine yet brawny offering.

Rich and extracted, with a purple color and nutty, maple-based aromas. There’s no denying the power here, and with flavors of sugar beets, smoked meats and kirsch, it’s quite the bruiser. Despite that heft, the finish is balanced, with chocolate and dried herb flavors. Some hard tannins make it a bit tough now; maybe time will tame it.
