Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This full-throttle blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre comes across as almost Zinfandel-like, with bold, briary fruit and hints of damp earth. Shows a bit of warmth on the finish, but also a flourish of bright berry fruit. Drink now and over the next several years.

More known for his Grenaches, Syrahs and Mourvèdres (and blends thereof), winemaker Chester Osbourn has a hit with this oddball white blend. Its composition changes yearly, but it’s always unoaked. This vintage is fresh and lively, with zesty citrus, melon and peach on the nose. Citrus and yellow fruit, plus some minerals, come through on the palate.

Starts off with a kick of white pepper on the palate, which segues into fleshy stone fruit and a citrus-like tang. It’s round in the mouth and moderately zesty, finishing a little less so.

Tastes and smells quite tropical, with pineapple and melon at the fore. The nose shows some butter, but on the palate that plump yellowness is more like honey. Finishes a little tart, but it’s still a juicy wine.

d’Arry’s original shows the best of both varieties–it’s fresh, fun and middleweight, with meaty, plummy flavors more associated with Shiraz. An enjoyable, drink-now wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells like a blended fruit-box juice, and gives a similar impression on the palate. Distinct red raspberry, plum, apple and grape flavors rides some rough wood on the palate. A straightforward Shiraz, but one that has not smoothed out yet. Give it six months or a year; maybe the wood will settle down.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fruit on the nose is very stewy, and doused in licorice. Mixed plum fruit flavors on the palate take on an iced-tea flavor; the finish shows more of the same plus a little green herb. This is a low-acid wine, in need of more structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Not a fruity, forward style of Cab—instead, earth and wood are prevalent, which gives the wine a wild, wooly feel in the mouth. Aromas reflect its earthiness; black cherry lingers underneath. A good match for grilled meat, or dishes with wild mushrooms.

There’s a lot of oak here—the nose, particularly, shows wood-derived herb and white peppery notes. Red fruit on the palate fades into smooth, oaky tannins on the finish.

D'Arenberg Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2001

The wine’s scant 7% Viognier is really noticeable, particularly on the nose, where feminine, floral aromas pretty up black-as-night oak and plum; this reviewer found violets among the wine’s similarly dark flavors. The feel is chewy and substantial at midpalate, though a little too woody on the finish.
