Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Daedalus is a very talented young winery making brilliant wines at sensible prices. The sources for this wine include Carabella, Momtazi, Maresh and Seven Springs, all superior vineyards. Winemaker Aron Hess is one of Oregon’s rising stars. Sweet fruit, dried herbs, sandalwood and spice in a clean, silky, seductive, well-rounded and seamless wine.

The Labyrinth bottling is made from older vines than the regular Pinot from Daedalus, and it is saturated with color and scents of mixed flowers. Rich, complex and textural, it adds unusual notes of mineral, hay and herb to the explosion of raspberry and cherry fruit.

Complex mixed stone fruits dappled with sweet cinnamon spice lead into a fairly lush midpalate. The dominant flavor is fresh cut pear, and the creamy texture spreads the flavors broadly through the mouth. A lovely wine to match with halibut or swordfish.

This wine, from a 30-year-old Riesling vineyard, will appeal especially to those who prefer a steely, austere style. Sleek and slightly metallic, it has plenty of acid and tart citrus flavor, but tails off into a finish that feels just a bit too sour. With the right food—oysters anyone?—it could be magic.

This is a solid effort, with good varietal character and definition. Half was fermented in stainless, half in neutral barrel, and the wine was given extended (130 days) lees contact. The herbal, peppery tang of the grape is clearly there, with intriguing hints of slate laced through the finish. This would be dynamite with sushi.

Daedalus Cellars winemaker Aron Hess purchases fruit from a wide range of vineyards and here mixes fruit, clone and fermentation practices with exceptional skill. This is a tightly wound young wine, showing a solid core of sweet cherry fruit. Rather than broaden out into a lazy fatness, as so many California Pinots do, this resonates with lingering grace notes and firm acids through an extended finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Labyrinth bottling is thicker and somewhat more tannic that the winery’s ‘regular’ Pinot. Superb vineyard sources (Seven Springs, Carabella, Momtazi) comprise the blend, and the wine gets plenty of skin contact while awaiting spontaneous fermentation. It’s saturated with color and redolent of herb and earth, bark and root, while the fruit, for the moment, takes a back seat. This is a wine that will benefit from extended breathing time and/or cellaring.

Another beauty from Oregon, this detailed (almost pointillist) effort is like a tapestry woven of citrus, grapefruit, pears and spice, then soaked in wet stones. Subtle and penetrating.

This is eastern Oregon Syrah, a completely different (and to my taste, far superior) style than the better-known southern Oregon Syrahs. Aromatically rich with smoked meat, tobacco, thyme, sage, berries and a dash of Kahlúa, it is nonetheless balanced and not too alcoholic. The tobacco scents translate into a lovely streak of flavor that runs through the wine.
