Update on the 2007 vintage. Not much difference between 06 and 07. The 2005 Rutherford is still better and I've yet to try the Howell Mountain version. I still give 3.5 stars because of the easy drinkability (new English word) and low price.

A fairly young cab that will clearly benefit from additional shelf time. Definitely drinkable now with good fruits on the nose. Strong, fairly balanced tannins, that will soften with time. A good combination of plums, cherries and tobacco finish this wine off. Drank a glass straight from the bottle and the rest decanted, which definitely helps this wine shine. A good buy at $15 (at Total Wine) which adds to the overall rating of 4 out of 5. Wine itself is a 3/3+ out of five if you take out the great price...check it out.

There is a definite difference between Daglia Canyon's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($15), and their Rutherford Cab ($20). The Napa Cab is a step down, but only a few dollars difference in price (see my note on DC Cab, Rutherford, 21 February). While the Rutherford version is produced right there on the vineyard, the Napa version is a blend of Cab grapes from all over the valley. Distinctively a California Cab, this very affordable, yet moderately complex wine has aromas of plum, oak, and a hint of vanilla. Flavors combine a complexity of oak, plum, mocha, and a slight vanilla finish if you're paying attention. Quite bold, full-bodied, and acidic (14% alcohol), which is pretty typical of California Cabs at this price point. I would definitely recommend this for someone that wants a good wine with their meal, but doesn't want to pay $20 or more; however, I would still spring for the Rutherford version, since there's not much difference in price. It's a bit smoother with a more pleasant aroma and flavor.

This $20 wine came recommended by one of the folks at the local Total Wine retail store. I had asked her the difference in paying $20 for this wine and $10 for a Chateau St. Michelle. She said it had to do with the fact that Daglia Canyon cab grapes were grown right there at the vinyard rather than grapes coming from all over the valley, thus producing a concentrated and well nurtured cab that speaks of the terroir, as opposed to another assembly line table wine. This cab is smooth with a big plum and spicey beginning, thick tannins and silky finish with a very subtle hint of rich chocolate... at least that's MY assessment. Well worth buying and drinking by itself, or with your favorite cut of steak.
