April 1, 2010There is a definite difference between Daglia Canyon's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($15), and their Rutherford Cab ($20). The Napa Cab is a step down, but only a few dollars difference in price (see my note on DC Cab, Rutherford, 21 February). While the Rutherford version is produced right there on the vineyard, the Napa version is a blend of Cab grapes from all over the valley. Distinctively a California Cab, this very affordable, yet moderately complex wine has aromas of plum, oak, and a hint of vanilla. Flavors combine a complexity of oak, plum, mocha, and a slight vanilla finish if you're paying attention. Quite bold, full-bodied, and acidic (14% alcohol), which is pretty typical of California Cabs at this price point. I would definitely recommend this for someone that wants a good wine with their meal, but doesn't want to pay $20 or more; however, I would still spring for the Rutherford version, since there's not much difference in price. It's a bit smoother with a more pleasant aroma and flavor.
