Here’s a polished, delicious young Pinot Noir that’s perfect for grilled steaks and chops. It’s full-bodied, silky and dry, but also fairly tannic, with savory black cherry, red currant, cola and sandalwood flavors. Could develop in interesting ways through 2013.

Here’s a Cabernet producer to keep your eyes on. The winemaker is Kian Tavakoli, who earned his stripes at Opus One and Clos du Val. The wine is sourced from three top vineyards, including To Kalon. It’s a very ambitious effort, one that defines great Napa Cab. Softly tannic now in its youth, the blackberry, currant and smoky oak flavors are delicious and complex, offering waves of ever-changing nuances. Should develop well for several years.

Good, but a bit tamped down and dull in character, although it’s very dry, and the tannins are nice and smooth. Not much going on flavor-wise except for modest blackberry and spice flavors. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very forward in jammy fruit, with waves of blackberries, cherries, raspberries, red currants, mocha and caramelized new oak. Feels too soft and melted to do much in the cellar, so drink up.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dry enough, but the fruit has a baked, raisiny taste, suggesting that some of the grapes got by the sorting table in a shriveled condition. The finish is tannic and rich in blackberries and spices, but the wine is not an ager.

Many wineries dip into this vineyard, with varying results. Damian Rae’s ’06 is a near copy of their ’05, a somewhat rustic wine, with hard tannins and some raisiny notes to the currant and anise flavors.
