Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chunky and green, with caramel oak sitting on top as camouflage. Modest berry fruit leads into a lean, quick finish. Over and out.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky and heavy, with a charred nose that masks strawberry and mineral notes. A bit shrill, but at least the cherry and raspberry fruit pops on the palate. Finishes warm and long, with a blast of fresh tomato.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With its crisp pear, apple and citrus flavors, this lightweight wine would work well as an apéritif. Some orange-blossom notes on the nose and a slight bitterness on the finish give it additional dimension. A small amount of Riesling boosts the aromatics further.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This textbook entry-level Merlot combines plum, mocha and herb shadings in a soft, almost sweet-tasting wine that’s sure to be poured by the glass at innumerable restaurants nationwide. There’s just enough tannin on the finish to give it the strength to pair with red meats.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s tough to find good inexpensive Sangiovese, but this one fits the bill. Plum and black cherry aromas and flavors are followed by a somewhat hard, unyielding green-tobacco finish that’s sure to cut through the mozzarella at your favorite pizza joint.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
You can usually count on this popular Grigio to deliver good value thanks to its no-fuss approach, fresh citrus and white fruit aromas. This release is less convincing because of a slightly muddled nose and watery mouthfeel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Frescobaldi’s Pinot Grigio proves to be a well-constructed and composed wine with green fruit like kiwi and honeydew backed by a pine resin, cut-grass quality. Silky smooth in the mouth. Imported by Folio Fine Wine Partners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Subtle pear and melon aromas are pleasant enough, and the mouthfeel is plump and low-acid. Easy-drinking and innocuous.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Frescobaldi/Mondavi Merlot offers sweet raspberry aromas doused in spices (anise, ancho chili, black pepper, cinnamon). On the dry side in the mouth, ordinary black berry fruit competes with char and toast for top billing. Ditto for the finish, which is on the acidic side. Best Buy.
