This is a substantial effort for the price. It’s got an Oregon spin to the varietal, which is to say that it has more than a hint of tomato leaf, and a somewhat resinous character. But the sharp, acidic fruit comes through with authority, and it will give you more meat and muscle than almost anything else under $20.

Flavors of buttery apple and apricot run through this smooth, pleasant-drinking wine with 8.1% residual sugar. Good length and a sweet, honeysuckle finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With alcohol reaching 14.6%, this reserve bottling is quite ripe—some might say too ripe—with fruit tasting of raisins and prunes. There’s plenty of oak, a hint of smoke, and heat in the finish.

For anyone seeking an American version of a fine German Kabinett, David Hill’s Rieslings should be your first stop. Vintage after vintage this winery nails it. Flower, fruit, citrus, light lemony honey, Jonathan apple, Asian pear, it just goes on and on in the mouth. At 12% alcohol, you might expect a sweeter wine, but the juicy acids keep it nice and dry through the finish.

This hard, tart and bitter wine does not seem to have much of anything in common with the varietal flavors of most Gewürztraminers.

A light style, already rounding out and heading for an early finish. Good choice with seafood or something spicy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Chardonnay is creamy and scented with vanilla, ripe apple and pineapple. The fruit has a slightly overripe quality, a suggestion of funk on the finish, and the vanilla seems artificial. It says unoaked, but that’s a lot of vanilla nonetheless.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Barrel fermented and aged on the lees for almost a year, this is a nutty, slightly oily wine that shows the influence of the barrel, but lacks the fruit density to match it. The 14% alcohol hits the palate with some heat. High-toned and a bit harsh.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a young, grapy wine, with primary scents of grapes accented with cola and tomato leaf. You taste grapes, berries, ginger and herb, with an interesting creamy streak of milk chocolate. It’s a well-made wine with surprising complexity and length.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With a pleasing array of beeswax, citrus rind, a slight hint of honey and ripe yellow apples, this is firm and surprisingly rich given that the alcohol comes in at just 12.4%. This is from one of the oldest plantings of Pinot Blanc in Oregon. Just 171 cases were made; it’s an elegant and delightful effort.
