Every once in a while, wine writers are awarded a producer like David Sterza: young, relatively unknown and full of promise for the future. His Amarone is a genuine “discovery” with beautiful, bright fruit, good cheer, cherry cough drop, red apple, coffee and dried herbs. This is a bright, lively wine and a wonderful expression of the territory.

There’s a cherry candy element to the nose of this Ripasso that gives it a playful, youthful edge. Aromas recall rose water and fragrant cola and the wine delivers a fresh, vibrant sensation on the finish. —M.L.

This is thinner and more compact in the mouth than most wines in this category, but it does also offer extremely bring and tonic aromas of white cherry, cassis and dried cranberry. There’s a playful touch of berry bitterness on the close that would work with cheesy risotto or pasta.

This is a beautiful Amarone that opens with elegant and not overdone aromas of mature fruit, cherry cola, cigar box, spice and toasted nut. Acidity, spice, heat and smooth tannins show excellent balance on the close.

David Sterza is a new name to watch in Valpolicella. He has crafted a dense ripasso with great intensity and long lasting aromas of spice, mesquite, cola and plump cherry. The wine is smooth, soft and velvety in the mouth.

Inky and deeply concentrated, this masculine Amarone presents thick layers of lead pencil, black cherry and stewed prunes. It’s definitely on the bulky side, but it does offer succulent richness and chewy tannins with loads of berry fruit that will keep you warm on a cold winter night.

David Sterza is a producer to watch. His impressive Amarone show consistency and Valpolicella typicity vintage after vintage. This expression is redolent of spice, cola, mature fruit and loads of clean, smooth black berry fruit.
