Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The winery seems to be picking earlier than most, so that the wine from this celebrated vineyard, in this wonderful vintage, is tough and tannic. You can taste the underlying cherry fruit, but it’s hard. The gamble is on ageability. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, try after 2006.

Silky and very dry, an austere Pinot that has some tannins to resolve. The flavors suggest earth, tobacco and bitter cherry, with just a hint of blueberry. Oak plays a supporting role. Might improve in a few years.

A nice Pinot with good black cherry, spice and earthy-coffee flavors and a bright burst of acidity. Smooth tannins complete the ride.

A polished, pretty Pinot Noir, brimming with young, appealing raspberry, cherry and cola fruit, brightened with fine acidity. For drinking now with steaks, seared Ahi tuna, lamb.

A bit lean and herbal, and certainly not in the same league as the luscious 1999. Just manages to break out into cherry fruit, but mainly consists of sage, cranberry and tobacco flavors. Big acids and fine tannins still combine to make this a compelling wine, despite its leanness. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Almost inky black, one whiff tells you this is a hugely extracted wine. It’s chock full of blackberry and cassis, plum, white chocolate, anise and smoky aromas and flavors. In the mouth, it’s a big, tannic wine with soft acids, concentrated blackberry flavors and lots of flashy oak. Very high class, but tannic. Age for a few years. Editors’ Choice. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A real fruit bomb, with explosive flavors of pineapples, lemons, limes and peaches, accented with sweet smoky oak. Malolactic fermentation adds softer flavors of buttered popcorn.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Is this wine is just too sweet and rich for its own good? You be the judge. The majority of our panel found it to be thumping with rich, very ripe blackberries, but also a medicinal, syrupy quality akin to liqueur. The tannins seem soft and fail to provide the structure this ultra ripe wine needs.

An intriguing wine, with honeyed-lemon and orange aromas backed up by spicy citrus, pear, apple, melon and floral notes. Long, bright, light, clean and minerally on the finish.

A Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend, and clearly grown in a cooler area. Flavors tend toward olives and tobacco, and are totally dry, with expressive acids. Tannins are soft, lush and complex, and coat the palate. A worthy companion for roast beef or lamb.
