Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, strong, gutsy Syrah, a powerhouse of jammy blackberries, currants, bacon, pepper and sandalwood. It’s completely dry, with rich, thick tannins and a long, spicy finish. Good now, with proper fare, and should glidepath through the next six years.

A wonderfully polished and supple wine that pleases with oodles of rich, smoky, cherry flavors and a smooth, chocolatey mouthfeel. The silky texture and crisp acidity make it complex and rewarding. Really a winner.

A lovely Riesling, made in the German style. It’s dryish, low in alcohol, high in racy acidity and tantalizing in flavor, with suggestions of citrus fruits, wildflowers, minerals and a distinct touch of petrol. It’s wonderful as an apéritif and fine with Indian and Vietnamese food.

Lots of racy acidity in this wine, which cleans the mouth and gets those tastebuds watering. It’s dry, with zesty grapefruit and lime flavors, accented with an oily touch of petrol. An elegant, exotic wine for cocktail sipping to get the evening started.

Sweet in oak and ripe in fruit, this Chard offers strong flavors of pineapple crème brûlée, vanilla bean, pear custard, buttered popcorn and cinnamon spice. It’s made to flatter the palate in a flashy way.

It’s quite good, a dry, full-bodied wine with complex, mashed blackberry and cherry fruit baked into peppery, cinnamony pie crust. There are additional, savory nuances of tamari, broiled ground beef and sweet Provençal herbs. Have this dry, powerful Syrah with fine roasted meats.

For fans of extreme pungency only. There's some grapefruit, but also large amounts of asparagus and hints of cat pee. Finishes tart, but not terribly fresh—after all, it is a 2002. Why is Russian River producer Davis Family Vineyards bringing this stuff in?

With licorice, pepper, coffee, wet rubber and mocha, this is a highly aromatic table wine, one that’s owned and made by the Davis family from California. The mouth features cola, blueberry and coffee notes, and the mouthfeel is simultaneously stylish yet lush. It’s immensely smooth, big and bold. —M.S.

Rich and appealing in raspberry, cola, cocoa and sweet oak notes, this Pinot is almost sweet. But it finishes dry, in a swirl of dusty spices. Drink now.

A beautiful wine that shows Riesling’s classic aroma of petrol. Dry and crisp in acidity, it has a sleek mouthfeel, offering flavors of wildflowers, apples, peaches, honey and minerals. How can a wine taste like honey and be dry? That’s the magic of Riesling.
