Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The small amount of Viognier helps to fill out this wine’s mouthfeel, adding weight to the spice-driven flavors of cracked pepper, licorice, coffee and block olive. Finishes long and well structured, with a velvety texture to the tannins.

Very light yellow in the glass, with light floral/fresh meadow aromas to match. White meat and pear fruit is weighty on the front palate, and fades into a bright herbal-steeliness on the finish. Not hugely fat or mouthcoating. It’s just the right size, and rather interesting at that.

A vibrant wine, but one whose flavors and aromas err on the side of strawberry shortcake, whipped cream and cheese. Dessert in a glass.

The aromas and flavors are altogether pleasant ones, but don't stray far from honey, honeysuckle, honeycomb—all the honey you could want—dotted with a light, plastic-rubber note. It's a simple, straightforward approach that yields a good, but pretty predictable, sticky wine.

It smells like lemondrops, and has plenty of zesty acidity on palate entry. By midpalate, this high-strung Sauvignon settles down a bit, revealing melon in addition to the earlier citrus. It’s less intense on the finish, but still a good buy. Imported by De Bortoli Wines USA Inc.

This Riesling offers pretty white chocolate and floral aromas, but what you get on the palate isn't quite as expressive, or as unusual. Soft-bodied in the mouth, which is unusual for a Riesling, with honeysuckle and olive oil flavors on the end. Surely easy to drink, but not too deep.

De Bortoli’s 2006 Estate Grown Pinot Noir lacks the bright fruit and user-friendliness of its Gulf Station or Windy Peak bottlings. Maybe it’s too serious for its own good? This medium-bodied wine features leather, mushroom and molasses, and rather crisp acids as well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
De Bortoli's 2006 Reserve Release Shiraz stays true to the house style of reserve and restraint, offering up meaty, olive-tinged flavors, modest alcohol and ample structure. There's a certain austerity to this wine that some tasters may favor more than others. Tasted twice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The nose offers up just a bit of intrigue, with gardenia, musk and white rose scents, but the focus of this wine is really its core of baked apricot flavors that turn just a bit jammy on the finish. Sweet, but not out of balance, good as a summer apéritif.

In keeping with winemaker Steve Webber’s moderate-alcohol, food-friendly style, this 2008 is medium in weight, with a silky-textured finish. Although labeled as Shiraz-Viognier, the Viognier component isn’t really apparent in the wine, which features more classic Shiraz notes of tar, beef and tapenade. Drink it over the next several years.
