Impressively young, this wine shows both the open, tropical side of De Sousa’s Champagnes and the firm, closed nature of 1996 bottlings. There is some toasty character and lively acidity along with flavors of pineapple. Has great aging potential.

This is without question a food Champagne. Toasty on the nose and powerful and full bodied on the palate, it is rich with sweet strawberries and just a touch of toast.

Erick de Sousa chose the name Caudalies, because it is a measure of how long the taste of a wine stays in the mouth, measured in seconds. This wine certainly lasts for many caudalies in the mouth. Packed with deep ripe-fruit flavors, powerful but also elegant, this is so rich, it almost has a tropical character.

A blanc de blancs, vinified in wood (15% new). It is rich, creamy, and still young with citrus and tropical fruits vying for dominance at this early stage. Wait for this wine to develop over the next five years—it will be magnificent.

The Caudalies vintage comes from old vines—at least 50 years old. This 1999 is creamy, rich, very soft. It has apricots, ripe fruits, very open, generous and deliciously ready to drink.

Erick de Sousa blends wines from six different years for this cuvée, which comes from old vines in the village of Avize. It has aromas of crisp green fruit and yeast. There is a light toast character on the palate along with lively acidity, which persists through the finish. This bottle had a disgorgement date of 4/19/2002.

A better-balanced wine than the same producer’s Cuvée des Caudalies, this blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier has aromas of toast and butter that lead to flavors of ripe pears and freshly baked bread. The finish leaves a delicious fresh, crisp, acid taste. This bottle was disgorged on 7/3/2002.

A fine, soft, creamy wine, with a touch of toast and fresh green fruit flavors. It is crisp and elegant, with flavors of hazelnuts and white fruits. With its light, poised character, this is a perfect apéritif Champagne. Disgorged on 4/17/2002

From 100% grand cru Chardonnay vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, this is a rich but almost bone-dry wine. It has a great mineral character that offers freshness, apple skins and a flinty edge. The disgorgement date is indicated on the bottle. Impressive, this would benefit from six months’ aging.
