Pretty and energetic, with aromas of gooseberry, citrus and slaty minerals. Like flavors follow and the wine offers balanced acidity and a crisp, clean character. Pair it with seafood or poultry dishes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strong citrus aromas and flavors—predominately lemon—permeate this offering from De Wetshof. There’s some cream on the nose, too, joined by mild spice tones on the palate. It finishes clean with little bother. Simple but appetizing.

This straightforward wine shows lime flower, chalk, and confectioner’s sugar on the nose. The flavors of lime zest and white grapefruit carry to the finish. This wine is fresh and simple with a spine of good acidity.

Buttered toast and cream aromas lead the way to toast, lemon and a hint of hay on the palate. The finish is lemony, with crisp acids and a sweet herbal streak at the back end. —K.F.

Bold and round, this Chard offers rich fruit flavors of ripe apple, white peach and soft melon propped against a yellow floral and honeysuckle backbone. Sensual but balanced with lively acidity and a clean close. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine starts with an intriguing nose that is at once floral, fresh and spicy. On the palate, it’s racy and fun but has an elegant, delicate edge. A combination of lemon and grass flavors with tropical melons and fruits are balanced and enjoyable. A good go-to white that will pair well with grilled seafood and salads.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a Chardonnay that showcases the best of what South Africa can offer: fresh fruit, elegant minerality, good value. The nose of citrus and flowers is both flirty and sophisticated, and the palate is friendly but complex, with mingling fruit and spice. Everything about the wine makes an impression from start to finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the midrange wine in Danie de Wet’s clutch ofChardonnays, proof that the hot climate of Robertson is no bar to making fine white wines. With its steely character, this is the most French wine, almost Chablis in style, from this producer. Spices, green plums, kiwifruit are all there, as is fresh, crisp acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A ripe but lively wine, from this master of Chardonnay. Danie de Wet’s entry point wine is full, fat and toasty but also has fresh, green fruit flavors and a layer of cinammon and tropical fruits. It is great Chardonnay, delicious and tasty. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Named after Danie de Wet’s wife, this elegant Chardonnay balances smooth fruit with crisp acidity and a spice-and-toast finish. There have been better, more concentrated, vintages of this wine—notably the 1998 and 1993—but it will develop well over the next four or five years.
