Toasty oak, rich pineapple, vanilla, and orangey-lemony aromas burst from the glass. Richly textured, with custard-like consistency and flavors of crème brûlée. Finishes with clove and other spices and enough acidity to provide delineation and length.

Deep pineapple and orange fruit is wrapped in a deep, toasty oak envelope in this Russian River classic. There are complex nutty, leesy, burnt sugar and even vaguely meaty notes on the nose. These open to a big-bodied but earthy and stony palate where bright, citrusy fruit and vanilla accents also vie for attention. Tightly wound, the burnt-toast and mineral finish is long and tasty, with more vanilla, smoke and apple accents. Top Value.

Very pretty, sweet fruit evoked “baked apple,” “strawberry pie” and “cherry-chocolate” descriptors from our panelists. Bright acidity shows with a modest tang. Intriguing sandalwood and citrus notes add interest on the long finish. Has unique elements and a solid fruit platform. Drink now–2006.

Hoo-boy, was the Dehlinger a tasting panel-pleaser. A "complete wine" that "should drink well from now until 2010," it has loads of spice and black-pepper aromas (plus earth, cocoa and graham cracker) and a full, even mouthfeel. Meaty, mixed-berry flavors on the palate are even more complex with dried spices, andise and saddle-leather accents. Finishes long, tart and peppery. "Stellar" and "one of the best of show."

Sweet, smoky nose with lots of green herbs and mineral notes; sweet and round in the front of the mouth with complex flavors layered through a nicely focused core of acidity; lemon grass, earthy tones, and minerals present on the palate; nice long citric finish. (17/20)
