Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Clean and fresh, this food-friendly wine tastes of pear, jicama and celery. It’s light and balanced, and would make a fine accompaniment to a springtime salad or a simple fish course.

There’s plenty of acid in this tart, sleek Chardonnay, and no obvious flavors from barrel aging or even malolactic fermentation. It’s simple, crisp, and tastes of green apples with a hint of cinnamon.

Petite Syrah (as it is spelled here) is no longer an approved label—Petite Sirah is correct—but this wine takes a good run a capturing the power and pleasure of the grape. Dark and tannic, it brings in plum and a hint of prune, also chocolate and earth, with good balance.

This is pure Merlot from southern Oregon, a style quite distinct from either Washington or California. It’s tight, sharp and somewhat spindly, with cranberry, wild strawberry and earthy flavors of bark and pepper.

Thin, herbal, and tannic, this does not show much in the way of either varietal character or ripeness.

A simple, pleasant Pinot Noir with suggestions of strawberries and chocolate wafers. Light as a feather, it seems almost weightless in the mouth, but it has no rough edges and would be a fine picnic wine.

This smells— and remarkably it also tastes—like bubble gum, with some pineapple tossed in for good measure. Peaches and apricots? Not so much; this is definitely an atypical Viognier, but brings plenty of candied fruit to the table.

A run-of-the-mill effort, with banana being the main fruit flavor. It’s got some chewy textures, and a light impression of fruit rind that gives some definition to the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light, almost ephemeral, this pale Pinot does not give you much to hold on to. The fruit is thin to the point of invisible, tasting of watermelon and little else. Thin, watery and plain.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The first impression is of Bosc pear, quickly followed by a lingering sweaty, plastic note on the finish.
