Heavy and extracted, with flavors of grilled black cherries, plums, sandalwood and exotic Asian spices. Delicious, but somewhat ponderous. Could develop in a few years.

Very big, bold and powerful, this Syrah, from the warmer eastern portion of the appellation, shows a tannic robustness that strongly suggests cellaring. It’s massive in blackberry, currant, plum, leather, tobacco and pepper flavors. Best 2010–2012.

Displays good terroir qualities of extraordinary ripeness, spiciness and crisp, cool-climate acidity. Just beautiful, with exotic flavors of grilled pineapples, honeysuckle, lemondrop, cinnamon and buttered toast.

Oak and lees mark this Burgundy-style Chardonnay, giving a creamy, smoky, doughy full body that the underlying wine is fully capable of supporting by virtue of the strength and purity of its fruit. It’s Chablisian, with mineral-infused lemon and pear flavors.

Very dense in the mouth and full-bodied, with a dry, soft feeling. Lots of toasty oak, too. Feels somewhat inert, but the delicious cherries, toast and spices make it a pleasant sipper.

This is a sumptuous, delicious Syrah, marked by very ripe fruit, but also by a wonderfully complex balance. Fully dry, it’s packed with blackberry pie filling, cola, licorice, mushu plum sauce, mocha and pepper flavors, with a distinct note of grilled meat. Drink through 2010 for its youthful beauty.

The vineyard has been a source to designations from the likes of Tantara, Foley and Fess Parker. Now they’re making their own wine, and it’s really good, with loads of crushed brown spices and masses of red stone fruit pie filling and chocolate flavors. It has Pinot’s silky delicacy, but is powerful, with a long finish. One of the best Santa Maria Valley Pinots of the year.

Very dry and tannic, showing the freshly-crushed Asian spices of the Santa Maria Valley. Full-bodied and a little heavy at this point, offering ripe raspberry, cherry, currant and anise flavors. Give it a few years to mellow.

Made without any oak influences, this wine shows the splendors of great Santa Maria Chardonnay. It’s marked by complex flavors of Meyer lemons, pineapples, orange zest and honeysuckle, and is beautifully bright in crisp acidity. Nice with fresh crab.
