Winery - Dolce

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend continues the Dolce tradition of being among the finest dessert wines in California. The wine as usual is rich and unctuous, a glyceriney sweetie packed with apricot, peach, honey, vanilla and crème brûlée flavors offset by crisp acidity. It’s sweet, but not too sweet.

Over many years Dolce has established itself as one of the top dessert wines in California, and the ’02 doesn’t disappoint. Enormously rich in apricot, tangerine and roasted coconut flavors, with plenty of botrytis notes, the wine was aged in 100% new French oak, and oozes in sweet vanilla char and crème brûlée.

This flamboyant wine is drenched in new oak the way Hollywood stars used to wrap themselves in mink. It’s fabulous, gooey-sweet in apricots, honey, vanilla, peaches and cream and ripe, sweet bananas sautéed in butter. It’s all folded into the most unctuous, butter cream texture. Thank goodness for the acids. Deliriously addictive. Mostly Semillon, with Sauvignon Blanc.

Oh, how good this sweetie is. If you have just one white dessert wine this year, make it this rich, thick, unctuous wine, with its fabulous flavors of apricot marmalade, orange honey, pineapple, chutney, smoke, vanilla, toast, toasted hazelnut, the list goes on and on. Fills the mouth with velvety opulence, and finishes very long. A special wine of great distinction.

Ripe hay, vanilla, and apricot mark the nose; deep orange flavors with cinnamon spice notes and a very smooth mouthfeel are the already promising attributes of this infant. All the right elements are there, and in good balance. Best cellared for three to five years.

This year, the Sauvignon Blanc is only 1% compared to the usual 10%, to the detriment of the wine. It’s broad in sweet honey, botrytised apricots, pineapple custard and vanilla smoke, and no one will complain when you bring it out. But it lacks the power of 2001 or 2002.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is not the best Dolce over the last five years, but having said that, it’s still a wonderful dessert wine. Rich in apricot, orange, pineapple tart, caramel and vanilla crème brûlée flavors, and with residual sugar of 10.4%, it seduces the palate with zesty sweetness. As delicious as it is, it just lacks that extra punch of intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With this wine, Dolce cements its status as California’s most consistently great dessert wine. This year’s blend is 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, and the grapes were infected with the botrytis, resulting in the fantastic sweetness. Devastating in apricot, orange, pear, honey, vanilla and créme brûlée flavors, in an unctuous, viscous texture, with wonderfully clean acidity, it’s certainly one of the greatest sweet California wines in memory.

OMG! This stuff is a great apertif! AKA "THE LIQUID GOLD." It pairs well with strong blue cheeses too!

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This is emerging as one of the premier late harvest wines in the United States, and although many wineries are now experimenting with this format, Dolce still stands alone in this genre, this evening in a rare magnum format; powerful and sweet nose with liquid apricots and peaches on the approach, very aromatic and perfumed, concentrated aromas with an almost transcendental sweetness; ripe, rich, smooth and dense in the mouth; concentrated dried fruit and melted sugar flavors; good acidity at the core of sweet lemons provides freshness; even with that there is a density and viscousness that clings to the inside of the mouth for minutes; the lack of botrytis removes some complexity and interest from the flavors, but an excellent example of the late harvest style. (18/20)
