With racy acidity, this palate-cleansing Chard shows a firm minerality undergirding Key lime pie filling and oaky, vanilla flavors. Fully dry, it’s a good food Chard. Try with a creamy mushroom risotto.

The winery's reserve Chard has a richly satisfying buttercream texture that frames ripe flavors of limes, peaches and pinepapples, ending in a spicy, honeyed finish. Crisp acidity makes the wine bright and clean.

Domaine Alfred’s been on a roll with Pinot Noir and Syrah. Now, they’ve blended the varieties into a wine of considerable interest. It’s dry and robust, with complex cherry, leather and spice flavors leading to a long, rich finish.

A little sharp, but this Central Coast Pinot is saved by big, bright flavors of cherries and a Pinotesque texture that’s silky and smooth. The cherry theme reprises on the finish, where it’s joined by rich notes of vanilla and smoke.

Here’s a dense, dramatic young Syrah. It’s potent in black currant, cherry, anise and dark chocolate flavors, with plenty of toasty new oak. But more notable is the structure. Fine, ripely sweet tannins, good acidity and moderate alcohol make it balanced and even ageworthy over the next 6 years.

Domaine Alfred Syrah - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Syrah shows the bright fruit and crisp, organizing acidity of Domaine Alfred’s Chamisal botting, which is their reserve, without quite the lushness and power. Nonetheless, it’s a fine Syrah, firm and dry in tannins, with fat, sappy texture framing jammy cherry, blackberry and peppery fruit.

The winery doesn’t say what the blend is, but this wine is very dry, thick and dusty in tannins, with cherry and chocolate flavors. It’s perfectly fine, a nice everyday sort of semi-fancy table wine

Opens with a blast of white pepper, with nuances of cherry pie, leather, and smoky oak. In the mouth, bone dry, fairly hefty in dry tannins, and with good acidity. The overall impression is of a lean, tough, rather tannic wine that needs time. Hold until after 2007.

Released just in time for summer, this will be a nice blush for barbecue, ham sandwiches, burgers, grilled veggies and similar easy comfort fare. Mainly Grenache, with Syrah, it’s dry and crisp, with pleasant cherry skin, fig and pepper flavors.

Edna Valley presents near-perfect conditions for Burgundian varieties. This Chardonnay has superb acidity, and the fruit has ripened brilliantly. The wine shows explosive tropical fruit, lime pie, vanilla and smoky oak flavors, in a rich and creamy texture that finishes dry.
