From the first whiff—laden with tangy notes of herb, leaf and spicy cranberry fruit—this announces itself as classic Oregon Pinot Noir. At 14+% it’s ripe enough to build a core of sweet cherry fruit; but it is not shy about expressing the herbal side of the grape, and does so to good effect. It’s a vivacious, expressive wine that offers a rich range of flavors, well beyond the basic fruit and barrel approach of too many wineries.

Unfined and unfiltered. this is dark, earthy and richly endowed with scents and flavors of organic matter, mushroom, compost and coffee grounds. There’s fruit in there also, but it really captures the earthy, broadly aromatic side of the grape. About one third new French oak was used, to good effect.

This comes across as somewhat disjointed, with sweet grapy fruit and some sweaty mushroom aromas that segue into charred, meaty notes. The balance is off, and the oak is tilted heavily to the charred, smoky side.

The cola scents characteristic of Oregon Pinot dominate the nose, leading into firm, plummy fruit with interesting layers of black raspberry and black cherry. Turns thin and tannic.
