From the co-op in Estézargues, this cuvée boasts an elegant bouquet of smoke and blueberries. Less lush and intense than some other recent vintages (most notably the yet-to-be-released 2005), it still boasts crisp, well-defined flavors and good length.

Importer Eric Solomon has been bringing this perennial winner to the States from the co-op in the village of Estézargues for a number of years. The 2000, a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, is a luscious mélange of baked cherries and earthy spice. The bold, slightly rustic flavors would make a perfect foil to a hearty lamb stew this winter.

Includes 20% Mourvèdre—the balance is Syrah—and you can taste its influence in the dark berry and cola flavors and a touch of treebark scent on the nose. A bit drying on the finish, so either drink now with rare beef or hold it a year or two. Another fine effort from the prolific co-op at Estézargues.
