Everyone who tasted this wine with me was drawn to the sexy, comforting nose—think hickory smoke and ham-bone stewiness layered with deep blackberry and brown sugar. On the palate, its black fruit is a little tangy, but is tempered by charred oak and caramel flavors. Well balanced, it closes with oak, green herb and a bit more caramel. Very dark and a bit tight—could use a year or two in the cellar.

Fruity, silky and simple, with jammy flavors of raspberries and red cherries, tobacco and spice. Feels light and pleasant in the mouth, but could use more stuffing.

This Chard is over the top. It’s got exceptionally high alcohol and the apricot flavors taste so baked, they’re almost stewed. The wine is dry and oaky, and represents an exaggerated style.

Smooth textured, with a silky mouthfeel. The wine is complex, with its hazelnut, pear, melon, herb and spice notes framed in toasty oak nuances. Bright, clean and long on the finish.

It’s all a matter of taste, but to me this wine is too hot, at 15% alcohol, and too sweet. The earthy, berry flavors are rich, and the tannin structure is complex, but it’s out of balance.
