Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s an unusual blend of 75% Grenache (typical) and 25% Mourvèdre (atypical), which may account for some of its individuality. There’s some cola and treebark murkiness to the aromas, but then the Grenache shines through on the palate, adding bright raspberry notes and a creamy texture. Supple and maybe a little delicate, but pretty. Drink now.

Fully oaked, with sauvage aromatic notes and plenty of smoke and meatiness. This is a bigger-styled wine, one with round ripe plum fruit and some apple-skin dryness. The back end is rich, almost thick, but it holds the line and remains restrained. This CdR offers ripeness, heft and richness. Best Buy.

Rather light in hue, and already showing some browning. This is fully mature, maybe even a little past it, but still holds onto some attractive peach notes to go with leather and tea flavors.

The nose is a blend of bramble, earth, smoke and leather. It seems to have a slight floral note, too. Meanwhile, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate flavors dominate prior to a thick but not overly tannic finish. –M.S.

With vines in Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Côtes-du-Rhône, the Chouvet family has 103 acres, with vinification being the charge of Helene Chouvet. This is a ripe, juicy, fruity, relatively soft style of wine, with some new wood, that only hints at the tannins and the earthy flavors that are beneath the surface. Imported by Exceptional Wines.

The molasses and milk chocolate scents suggest overripeness, which is echoed on the soft, prune-driven palate. The brawny, chocolaty texture is not a drawback, but it seems raisiny, while the alcohol is a bit too pronounced. —M.S.
