There's a lifted, herbal element to this wine's aromas of cherries and dusty earth, but it serves to add complexity, not detract from the fruit. In the mouth, the flavors include hints of pepper and meat alongside oodles of ripe cherries. It's all balanced and harmonious even if it's not a blockbuster. A fine effort from a difficult vintage.

Alain Dugas, who is also the winemaker at Château La Nerthe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, runs this estate, and he has turned out a concentrated, dark-fruited wine in the 2004 vintage. Black cherry and plum pick up hints of tree bark, coffee and earth on the firmly tannic finish. Drink 2010–2015.

Fresh in style, especially for the hot, dry 2007 vintage, reflecting the slightly higher elevation of the Massif d’Uchaux, this medium-bodied wine offers oodles of cherry-berry fruit. It’s nothing too serious or complex, just good, quaffable pleasure to consume over the next 2–3 years.

This has been a reliable producer over the past few vintages, although the price has crept up substantially. As in the past, the Renjarde isn’t a huge, hulking wine, just a well-balanced, medium-bodied Côtes-du-Rhône for early consumption. Crisp cherry fruit features hints of chocolate, earth and cola.

Full, lush and soft—built to drink over the near term—this is a brazen mouthful of fruit. Black cherries lead the way, with only modest hints of briar patch and fresh herb to add complexity.
