Really dark and savory in character, with scents and flavors that run toward meat, soy sauce, mushroom, coffee and prune. Tart and firmly tannic on the finish. Save the extra money and buy the regular bottling, which shows better balance.

Shows better balance than Trapadis’s Les Adrès luxury cuvée, with dried cherries, leather and a lush, warming mouthfeel. The flavors are of superripe cherries, but there’s still fresh acidity, that results in a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now.

Trapadis’s basic Côtes-du-Rhône is a solid value pick year in and year out. The 2003 shows hints of sur-maturité in its aromas of stone fruit and almond; there’s also a hint of orange peel. Dried cherry flavors glide on silky tannins, while it firms up and adds crispness on the finish, courtesy of the high proportion of Carignan. Drink now.

Nicely perfumed by scents of anise or fennel, fresh rasberries and coffee, and although those notes carry on to the palate, the wine seems a bit tart, as it thins out on the finish.

Even for a top Côtes-du-Rhône this is a powerful wine. It has great fruit, ripe tannins and firm black-cherry flavors. Still young, there is a touch of barnyard which will certainly blow away, and give the wine great aging potential.
