Clove, peach and smoky-vanilla aromas lead to peach and citrus flavors that drink excessively sweet, almost off-dry in the sugar department. The flavors are pretty and the wine is crisp, but would be better if it were dry. —S.H.

Fruitier and more full-bodied than you want in a Pinot Noir, although it’s a tasty wine with its own merits. Seems likely it was grown inland, in hot weather. Very extracted and rather sweet flavors of cherries, cola and berries are wrapped in silky tannins. Finishes hot and sweet. —S.H.

Overly ripe grapes have given this wine unbalanced aromas of stewed prunes and make it taste hot and ponderous. Cool nights preserved vital acidity but the fruit tastes cooked. You might almost think this was Syrah except for the tannins. The dry finish reprises the pruny theme. —S.H.

Elegant and suave, this is red Burgundy as interpreted in Mendocino. Solid red-cherry fruit and a velvety mouthfeel are complemented by a certain herbal stemminess that adds complexity and structure.

Curiously not as satisfying as the regular bottling (reviewed May 2000), the reserve sacrifices prettiness in search of power. Too much alcohol adds heat to the mouthfeel, and a vinegary nose distracts from the good fruit.
