This is one of the most powerful in the range of Zind-Humbrecht’s extraordinary Gewürztraminers. It is packed with spice and pepper, and is rich, but dry. Its power comes from the sheer concentration of fruit. This is the sort of wine that needs to be drunk by itself—it will dominate any food.

It may be vendange tardive, but the sweetness is the least of this wine’s qualities. It is more to do with how it relates to the terroir of the Heimbourg vineyard, with its mineral character, and its fine structure and texture. The fruit is still young, and would benefit from 5–10 years aging.

Like an explosion in a flower shop, this exuberant white offers up harmonious scents of gardenias, carnations and white roses alongside lower tones of petrol and slate. It’s intense, flavorful and starting to show some development. Try with classic French fish preparations.

Profound enough for serious contemplation but with enough broad fruit appeal to serve to a crowd. There’s loads of upfront Asian spice and lychee, afloat on a luxurious, sensually textured palate. Notes of geranium and macadamia nuts keep the taste buds entertained and carry over to the lingering finish. The noticeable residual sugar suggests pairing with something slightly sweet, like Tilapia in a mango salsa. Drink now to 2011.

This powerful white has an intriguing nose of toasted almonds, spiced orange and almond cookies while the mouth is an explosion of intense nut, cinnamon and honey, set against a noticeable level of residual sugar. A good wine to savor on its own. Drink over the next three to four years.

A unique wine for Alsace, this blend of Chardonnay and its kissing cousin, Pinot Auxerrois, is fashioned in a Burgundy style. It’s stylish and richly textured with vanilla and luscious tropical fruit up front and notes of apple and wet stones at the back. Flavorful but short finish. Try with salmon. Drink now or hold a year or two for more complexity.

A real stunner; a full-bodied, ripe, luxurious expression of Riesling. There’s opulent fruit here and sweetness but the impression in the mouth is dry and steely due to a laser-like undercurrent of acidity. Flavors run to petroleum and candied lemon peel, brightened up by a light cinnamon note. Long, long, long finish of applejack, butter and cream. Will benefit from decanting. Drinking well now but will improve over the next 10-plus years.

Complex and steely, this is a wine with a lot of energy and a solid core of acidity that carries flavors of white cherries and lime from the attack all the way through to a dry, lingering finish. Has solid length and definition. Let this one mellow a few years.

This is undeniably a concentrated wine offering a complex set of very appealing aromas and flavors (singed grapefruit peel, honey, caramel). However, it is a bit out of balance at 15.5% alcohol and finishes shorter than one has a right to expect in this triple-digit price range. It’s starting to show some development and will probably not improve, so best to drink up soon.
