Val de L'Ours (Valley of the Bear) is a new Languedoc brand from the wine makers of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The wine, 75% Cab and 25% Syrah, is light, juicy, and extremely drinkable with supple black plum, currant and cherry aromas and flavors.

Basic melon and peach aromas become more pungent and citrusy with airing. The palate has weight and zest but lacks complexity, while the flavors are citrusy and green, much like Sauvignon Blanc, which is common for this wine based on past performance.

Rich and bold from the start, with cassis, raspberry, coffee and tobacco aromas that yield to creamy mocha upon airing. The palate is ripe, tannic and structured, with blackfruit flavors, a touch of herbs and espresso. Long and herbal on the finish, with a smooth fade. Drink now through 2015.

A wonderfully made varietal white that’s just what Chilean SB should be. A blend of sweet pears and snappy grassy scents work the nose, while lime and grapefruit are at the head of the palate. A lasting finish confirms this wine’s quality and character.

The bouquet of cassis, blackberry and controlled oak is welcoming, while the palate shows a spot of piercing acidity along with snappy black cherry, cassis and light olive flavors. This is a quintessential Chilean Cab with a hint of herbal character but also bold color, power and very good fruit quality.

Attractive and very much in the vein of what is really good Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. The bouquet is all about green herbs, cactus pad, passion fruit and citrus. The palate transitions from lemon-lime to tropical pineapple and passion fruit, while the finish is breezy and zesty. It is a lean, 100% Casablanca style of SB, and while it’s a step down from the great 2007, the drop is not a big one.

Aromas of apple blossom and citrus are standard, while the palate seems fresh and properly acidic. There’s racy pineapple and kiwi flavors, and the finish seems more tropical and friendly than refined or demanding. Shows a hint of Sauvignon Blanc character as it delivers zestiness and freshness.

Having liked the 2007 rosé from Los Vascos, this pickled, citric burner just doesn’t cut it. It shows Sauvignon Blanc-like flavors and acidity, while the finish is sour and briney. Devoid of the charm and pleasantries that rosé should deliver.

Overt and dark, with sweet, earthy aromas and plenty of telltale cassis. For a basic appellation Cabernet, this delivers the goods. The potent palate is packed full of plum, cherry, cassis and more. The finish is so chocolaty and full that it almost seems chewable. Well done.

Aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit and citrus lead the way. The palate deals more citrus and a touch of banana. A bit thinner than many, with a peppery, clean finish.
