Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Anyone who enjoys a meaty, over-the-top Syrah, one that’s full of bacon, leather and supercharged tannins, should try this. The palate is like blueberry pie, but with smoky bacon on top. The finish is chewy and long. This wine borders on being cloying—it’s that rich. Best with fatty ribs or cheeseburgers.

Fairly light and fruity as a result of only 20% barrel fermentation. Shows lemony, clean aromas and a medium-size body. With just a hint of barrel influence, it’s zesty but short. Good for parties.

Brutally charred and saturated with leather and mushroom but no discernible fruit. The palate is a heavy mass of wayward oak and black nothing. Syrah in Argentina is a shaky endeavor, and this one doesn't help the cause.

Lively, with young legs. The bouquet blasts forth with lemon curd and ripe apple aromas, which are followed by a plump yet racy palate full of spicy apple, pear and mild mineral notes. Not meant for the long haul.

Always a good buy and always big and husky, Gascón is a saturated and dark wine but one with good balance and texture. The nose features cola, boysenberry and density, while the palate is sweet and floral, with big berry flavors. Quite good for a fat young Malbec.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Malbec, a Bordeaux grape often used in blending, makes its mark in the Argentina's Mendoza region, where it yields sturdy, flavorful reds characterized by inky color and chewy texture. The black cherry fruit has an appealing coffee-chocolate overlay and dense mouthfeel. Tangy, peppery tannins and an earthy note on the back end show a more rustic side of the personality of this great grilled-meat companion.

Bright purple in color, with heavy smoke and rubber aromas that together come across as bacon and bitter chocolate. Cassis, plum and tobacco rest comfortably on the palate, while the finish is grapy, extracted and toasty. In recent years this wine has carved out its own style, and this vintage fits the model. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.

Heavily oaked and offering the full monty in terms of toast and char. But that burnt quality works well here, largely because the fruit is healthy and ripe. Flavors of black plum and nutmeg-tinged berry define the heart of this full-extract red. Yet another wine from the Catena stable.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A meaty, bold wine, with peach, custard and crushed vitamin comprising the nose. Tastes sweet and cloying, with sugary citrus flavors. A sticky, heavy finish is saturated with tropical fruit and sweet almond candy. The feeling here is that this is too ponderous.

A bright purple luster draws you in, and the nose is bright, clean, focused and full of wild blackberry. Balanced in the mouth, with size and tannin but plenty of acidity and fruit. Tastes of blackberry, vanilla cream, molasses and spice, and the finish brings it on home. Sincere and excellent for the price.
