Round, fruity and quite exceptional in its class. This Verdejo sets the standard for Rueda; it’s loaded with green melon and pineapple up front and backed by bright apple, pear and green herb flavors. Perfectly balanced and fresh. Stands out from the crowd.

This is truly a unique wine in the sense that hardly any Verdejos are fermented in oak. Not only that, the end result is stellar. There’s soft buttercup aromas leading into a layered, vanilla-edged palate of spiced apple, melon and greens. The wine is round, substantive and it stirs interest. And for that we’re grateful. Drink now through 2008.

An excellent Verdejo from Rueda is as good as fresh, crisp white wine from Spain gets. And the two Victorias that make José Pariente know their stuff. After an overly ripe 2005, this vintage shows more of Pariente’s patented lemon, citrus and mango flavors. The feel of the wine is super solid and the finish is long and properly acidic. It’s a treat for fans of Spanish whites.

Significantly more bulky, aggressive and unrefined than previous vintages, and overall fairly disappointing given that this was one of our favorite Verdejos the past couple of years. The 2005 version offers mostly chunky melon and pithy citrus. It lacks the verve, clarity and pure fruit that we fell in love with. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Peach, melon and apple aromas are more or less what’s left on the nose, and the palate also indicates a fine wine in decline. Nobody will tell you that Verdejo has the stuff for long aging, but Pariente remains a wine of refinement and complexity. So catch it now for the last of its melon, green-fruit and pear flavors, which are backed by a lasting but soft finish.

During the harvest last fall winemaker and owner Vicki Pariente said 2007 would be a lean year in Rueda with some great wines. Hers is very pungent and full of nettles, sweat and other cool-climate symptoms. Which doesn’t make it a bad wine; just tight, lean and green. If you have liked Dos Victorias Verdejo in the past, stick with it in ’07.

Balanced Spanish whites were rare in the hot ’03 vintage, but this one is. Two female winemakers, hence the Two Victorias name, flat-out nailed this Verdejo, which pours on round peach, gooseberry, almond and mineral aromas and flavors. Clean as a whistle, with a finish that hits with power.
