Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts slow, gradually ramping up its complexity and concentration as it warms in the glass, eventually opening up to show scents of diesel and peach pit alongside flavors of lime, peach and melon. Throughout, there’s a strong sensation of minerality, ending on a crisp, mouthwatering note. Imported by Classical Wines.

Yes, this is the current release. The “R” series of Dr. B-W has a minimum of 5 years in bottle; in this case it’s 10. The concentrated and intense superripe aromas and flavors are not too sweet, show no botrytis and are still quite lively at this age. Tropical fruit, orange and pure grape flavors mingle sensuously with spice and vanilla. They play out on a long, ripe, almost unctuous finish that blends in hints of diesel. A perfect foil for foie gras.

Rather big and full-bodied (13% alcohol), but also full-flavored, combining honeyed orange peel with ripe melon notes and a dry-ish, spicy finish. Imported by Classical Wines.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich and thickly textured, showing impressive concentration but also a heavy, plodding feel. Pear and apple flavors struggle alongside hints of unripe melon and quince. Unclear how this one will evolve, hence the conservative rating. Imported by Classical Wines.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Plump and concentrated, but it doesn’t have the same raw power as Bürklin-Wolf’s Rechbächel bottling. What it does have is finely defined fruit that ranges from Anjou pears to Golden Delicious apples, all tinged with honey and spice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, broad-shouldered Riesling that for all its size stays soft and friendly in the middle. Smoky, leesy aromas give way to flavors of mineral oil ladled over spiced pears. There’s a sense of custardy richness that lingers on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky and earthy, with flavors of damp clay and just hints of pear and apple fruit. Lacks the acidity to make the flavors sing.

This is a plump, medium-bodied Riesling that exemplifies the Pfalz style, combining some briny mineral notes with ripe fruit and citrus. It’s close to dry, finishing with pleasant peach and spice notes.

This 14-acre monopole is Dr. B-W’s top property. The wine has big fruit, but is still tight, with interlaced layers of pineapple, lime and mineral with a waxy note. Extremely concentrated and rich, with a slightly viscous mouthfeel, it’s a baby that’s impressive for its vigor, density and superbly balanced weight. Talk about structure—after two days, it showed even more vigor, power and depth than when it was first tasted. Cellar Selection.
