Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Round, lush and sweet, this may not have the textbook pinpoint crispness of Mosel Riesling, but it does offer mouthfilling pleasure. Apple and citrus or pineapple fruit is wonderfully pure, yet buttressed by solid underpinnings of minerality and a lingering, slightly oily finish. Imported by Chapin Cellars, LLC.

What balance! This wine’s considerable sweetness is admirably buffered by ample acidity, while low alcohol adds to the impression of lightness and ease. This structural balance is complemented by the way slaty-minerally aromas play off bright tangerine and peach flavors, ending seamlessly, crisp and long. Delicious now, but should easily age 20 years.

Mid-gold in color. Quite a broad bouquet - ripe stone fruit honey, white flowers and a strong stony mineral focus. Sweet, smooth, rich texture yet crisp, refreshing and brimming with lively flavors. Very long, persistent with complex layers that linger on the finish.

Elegant, though there’s no shortage of density to these flavors. Membrillo, sour drops and apricot are the main themes, set against a mineral undertow. The palate is crisp and balanced though quite off-dry, winding down to a long, subtle finish of stone fruits. Great now, but will improve over the next few years.

Prospective purchasers should bear in mind that this wine was harvested at sugar levels far beyond the minimum spätlese requirements. This is more of a big auslese or small beerenauslese in terms of sugar and style, marrying dried apricot aromas with notes of candied pineapple and spice. It’s very sweet and honeyed, and would be cloying were it not for its firm acid backbone. This can be cellared for 20 years. Imported by Chapin Cellars, LLC.

Luxurious and off-dry, with faded flower scents shot through with gunflint. Roses and carnations grace the palate, trailing off to a medium, perfumed finish. Try with Thai noodles. Drink at its peak now but will hold a few years.

Limes, minerals and green apples dance on the nose of this lithe yet flavorful kabinett. Flavors lean heavily toward green apples and citrus, yet the acids are ripe on the finish, giving an impression of softness and early approachability.

The legendary Thanisch estates has produced an auslese which is almost beerenauslese in its richness and color. There are layers of botrytis, flavors of honey and rich lemon zest and a long lingering aftertaste.

A lusciously fruity wine, showing better acids than many 2003s yet remaining soft and friendly. Apples and pears on the nose blend with tropical and citrus fruit on the palate. Finishes sweet and long, balanced by ripe acidity.
