Mid gold in color, this wine displays unctuous aromas of honey, ripe apricot, wildflowers and slate. Sweet, but has a lovely raciness on the palate. The plump peach and apricot flavors are layered with hints of anise, slate and honey that come across as very pure and elegant. Taut, focused palate and a long, juicy minerally finish.

A deliciously sweet wine that’s not at all heavy; its spice-laden aromas mirror those of a dry rub for roast pork, folding in flavors of ripe Granny Smith apples and Anjou pears. The mouthwatering finish persists admirably, bringing back echoes of dry spices. —J.C.

Give this wine some air before you serve it in order to appreciate the entire range of its dense aromatics, which flow from delicate tangerine, to peach and on into the mineral end of the spectrum. The palate is juicy, with an energizing tension between the nervy acidity and delicate sweetness. Finishes long, with a slate undertow. Try with cod in a miso sauce.

A pale, lemon color Riesling. The complex nose of honey, delicate stone fruit, elder-flower and stony minerality is deliciously inviting, while intense, focused ripe fruit prevails all across the palate. This is sweet, yet crisp and oozing freshness, with a taut, lively texture. Very long, complex and subtle at the same time.

A lovely bouquet of ripe peach, apricot and lemon notes. Fairly round peach, tart apple and earth flavors play on the palate and linger through the clean finish with its green apple and crisp mineral elements. From a well-regarded vineyard on a heart-stopping vertical slope, known for its elegant wines, everything here is beautifully defined. This will age well.

A sinuous wine with lots of lime and mineral elements beautifully entwined. The bouquet is attractive but taut with lime and mineral notes. In the mouth the wine really opens up, with peach, tangerine, lime and green-apple fruit with a faintly spritzy feel. The sweet fruit is supported by good acidity and balanced nicely by the strong, stony mineral element. The fruit, minerals and good grip, must come from the amazingly steep rocky vineyard source. Just 400 cases made. Editors’ Choice.

Ernst Loosen’s big-production wine is a smashing success in 2002, a bit shy on the nose, but possessing a well-balanced blend of apples, pears and citrus fruits on the palate. Its soft, talcum-powder-like texture and touch of sweetness make it easy to like, the balancing acidity makes it easy to drink.
